The system was in place to work off debts. Slaves could eventually buy their freedom. Even the Jews had laws—many found in the Old Testament—that protected slaves and gave them certain rights. In fact, Jews celebrated Jubilee every 50 years; slaves were released to commemorate their own release from Egyptian bondage. So Paul and Peter spoke to people living in that culture. We must remember also that Paul does encourage slaves to gain their freedom if they can.

The Gospel is simple not easy to mentally accept but simple: Believe and Receive. The transformation that takes place in the heart of a person that does just that, is undeniable.

I guess we are just gonna ignore that the Bible does indeed speak about slavery in a permanent sense much like American slavery. Nice try though. You may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance.
